Getting breast implants have become so mainstream nowadays. There is virtually no stigma attached today when one's full breasts are discovered to be enhanced compared to before. It is because of the wide acceptance of breast augmentation that the fact of it being a major surgery with inherent serious risks has been ignored or downplayed. In considering this surgery, one should be aware of the risks as the effects of which will last long after the implants were placed

There are breast augmentation risks that are easily pinpointed as these cause change in appearance. These are capsular contracture, implant displacement, saline implant deflation, and rippling. Capsular contracture, especially in severe cases, makes the breasts look very hard and round, in other words, they look exactly like a very obvious boob job. This happens when a scar forms around the implant. Implant displacement means that the implant obviously moved in any direction giving the appearance of lopsided breasts. Saline implant deflation happens when the implant shell tears up, leak out and deflate, making the breast shrink back to its original size. Rippling is the term for the appearance of a sort of wrinkling of the skin on top of the implants, much like the ripples or small waves in an otherwise still body of water. The shifting of saline inside the implants causes this situation. In all cases, corrective surgery is necessary, which of course still exposes the patient to the same risks. Lastly, there is that risk of embarrassment when the implants make noise. This usually happens when the saline fluid slosh around when one moves. This risk won't affect those who opt for silicone implants.

Other risks from breast augmentation surgery are less obvious but are as dangerous or even more so. As with any surgery, there is the risk of infection. This calls for antibiotic treatment and removal of the infected implant. Another surgery risk is hematoma where blood pools into the surgical area. The blood could form into a mass and is really painful, often requiring surgical intervention. There is also the risk of the silicone implants being ruptured. When the silicone leaks into the body, it could cause an inflammatory response, which will in turn lead to capsular contracture. Silicone poisoning has also been reported to happen after rupture. Other risks include loss of sensation in the nipples, interference during a mammography, removal of the implant in case of product recall, and not being able to breastfeed exclusively as the ability to produce enough milk is affected.
